What is Phonics Instruction?

Students learn about the relationships of letters to sound as well as the structure of words to help them in reading and spelling.

"... in the world of the future, the new illiterate will be the person who has not learned how to learn."

Alvin Toffler, US writer, with wife Heidi wrote Future Shock, The Third Wave, Powershift & others.

Winterfield uses two direct instruction word study programs, Fundations, & Words Their Way.  These programs work in tandem to strengthen students knowledge of letters, sounds, word structure, and vocabulary, in both reading and writing.

In kindergarten and first grade students have an opportunity to receive word study instruction in a phonics laboratory.  This lab is dedicated to providing direct instruction to our young students about the relationship of letters and sounds.  Students attend the phonics lab for one hour each day.  This set up allows k-1 classroom teachers to work with small groups and tailor instruction to meet the needs of each child.

Students in second and third will be provided with  Fundations instruction in the classroom.  Students in second through fifth grade will receive word study instruction in the classroom through The Words Their Way Curriculum.
