Balanced Literacy
Balanced literacy is comprised of four major components independent reading, support reading, writing, word study. Winterfield implements balanced literacy supporting the mission and vision of the district. We incorporate the mini-lesson structure and independent reading. The supported reading is accomplished through shared reading, close reading, guided reading and interactive read alouds. In K-2 we use the Being a Writer program as the core writing curriculum. We support word study through the use of a phonics lab in kindergarten and first grade. In second through third grade, phonics lessons are conducted in the classroom. Students have the opportunity to build word study knowledge through Fundations and Words Their Way.
